Farewells are always bittersweet. Especially when they involve someone as innovative and inspiring as our resident “SimMan” and MMSIV Division Chief, Mr. Geoff Miller. After six years with us, Geoff officially hung up his TATRC hat and headed down the road to fulfill a brand new role as the Director of the Johns Hopkins University Medicine Simulation Center!

Anne was born in Lansing, Michigan and grew up in the suburbs west of Philadelphia. She attended Villanova University where she received a BA in psychology. At George Washington University in D.C., she earned her Master’s degree in Education and Human Development majoring in Counseling, especially within schools.

The Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) – Resource Limited (RL) was a 2-day course held in March of this year and was hosted at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in conjunction with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland.

TATRC has recently developed a new research environment, the NEXUS laboratory. The NEXUS is a high-technology medical performance measurement laboratory, designed to explore, analyze and understand the intersection of humans, data and technology within and across the Military Health System (MHS).

TATRC’s Medical Modeling, Simulation, Informatics, and Visualization (MMSIV) Division welcomed the new year in January by hosting three days of intensive hands-on training on their newly acquired Strategic Operations (STOPS) Total Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and Surgical CutSuits.

TATRC deployed seven representatives from multiple divisions within our organization to participate in this year’s Cyber Quest 21 (CQ21) at Fort Gordon in March. TATRC personnel coordinated with the CQ21 planners to synchronize the simulated casualty scenario within the CQ21 exercise One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF) computer simulation program, which was being conducted on-site at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA.

Mr. Geoffrey T. Miller, Senior Research Scientist and Division Chief of the Medical Modeling, Simulation, Informatics and Visualization (MMSIV) team, has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSiH).

Mr. Eric Briggs, a combat medic, and Mr. Rob Shotto, a Simulations Technologist, both from TATRC’s Medical Modeling Simulation, Informatics, and Visualization (MMSIV) team, conducted an all-day Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training session for the MMSIV staff.

On 19 March, Mr. Geoffrey T. Miller, Senior Research Scientist and Division Chief of the Medical Modeling, Simulation, Informatics and Visualization (MMSIV) team presented a virtual interactive session entitled “Joint Medical Simulation Instructional / Operational Methods (JMedSIM)” at the 2021 International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH).

On 24 November, TATRC was privileged to host Command Sergeant Major Diamond Hough, of the U.S. Army Medical Command (MEDCOM), as well as our own CSM, Victor Laragione, for a briefing on current initiatives and a tour of our Simulation facility.

Mr. Robert “Rob” Shotto joins TATRC’s Medical Modeling, Simulation, Informatics, and Visualization lab as a new Simulation Technologist. His expertise is in Human Patient Simulators and tactical medicine, and while he will be primarily supporting and assisting the MMSIV group, he will also work with other labs at TATRC headquarters in Ft. Detrick, MD.

Ms. Holly Ortman joins TATRC’s Medical Modeling, Simulation, Informatics, and Visualization (MMSIV) team as a Critical Care Nurse. Her nursing experience will mainly be focused in the MMSIV lab, while also assisting in other TATRC capacities at Ft. Detrick, MD.

Ms. Ann Trout is the newest addition to join the TATRC team. Ann will be supporting and assisting the ever growing Medical Modeling, Simulation, Informatics and Visualization team at TATRC headquarters as their Administrative Assistant.

TATRC Junior Project Officer (PO) James “Jimmy” Gaudaen is TATRC’s Q3 Employee of the Quarter! Jimmy has served in an increasingly challenging and enhanced capacity since coming on board in the Fall 2018.

TATRC’s Medical Modeling, Simulation and Visualization (MMSV) lab has added yet another resource and asset to its growing team. Ms. Christen Phillips joins us as the new Medical Simulation Specialist for MMSV. Christen is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS), and an experienced healthcare simulation professional with 16 years of experience within healthcare education and research.

Mr. Eric Briggs joins Team TATRC as our new Combat Medic for the Medical Modeling, Simulation and Visualization (MMSV) lab. Mr. Briggs was most recently with the U.S. Department of State and is an 18 year veteran of the U.S. Army and Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

TATRC was once again honored to attend and take part in one of our favorite simulation events of the entire calendar year! The 2020 International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) took place 18-22 January, in sunny San Diego, CA and was another record breaking year for IMSH with over 4,100 attendees taking part in this unique event.
