Surgery of the Future

Mehran Anvari MD PhD, FACS, Professor of Surgery, McMaster University, Canada

This presentation will discuss the emerging trends in surgery towards two specific goals of 1- targeted therapies minimizing collateral damage to normal adjoining tissues, & 2- minimally invasive surgery with minimization of patient discomfort and recovery period. There will be discussion and demonstration of role of surgical robotics in helping achieve these two goals, as well as training of surgeons through remote robotic assisted tele-assisting. The presentation will include demonstration of current level of robotic and tele-robotic research, many of which is funded by TATRC and DARPA.
