The First Workshop on Bio-inspired Models and Technologies for an Ambient Information Society1 December 2010 - 3 December 2010 Boston, MA
This workshop aims to bring together researchers and scientists from several research areas, including biology and information sciences, to foster research and development of novel ambient society technologies, architectures and control methods.
The ambient information society can be summarised as an environment designed so that the user is not consciously aware of the presence of information and communication technologies. This is done by using a system that comprehensively understands the user's needs and effectively transmits information through various information devices embedded in the environment.
New innovative technologies are required to address the expected challenges of the ambient information society, such as understanding user desires, recognition of environmental conditions, adaptation of ambient systems and the provisioning of information to users. Biologically-inspired approaches are promising in building such technologies by opening up an interdisciplinary way of thinking and working.
Topics at the conference are set include:
- mathematical models of biological systems,
- bio-inspired application technologies for ambient information society,
- bio-inspired information technologies for ambient information society,
- bio-inspired networking technologies for ambient information society,
- bio-inspired interface technologies for ambient information society.

A smart environment is a residential or other setting equipped with a set of advanced electronics, sensors and automated devices specifically designed for care delivery, remote monitoring, early detection of problems or emergency cases and promotion of residential safety and quality of life. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are utilized to allow various populations including citizens with chronic conditions, disabilities, older adults and families to live independently in their preferred environment. Thus, systems are patient-centered rather than institution-centered as they are designed to address the needs of the elderly, their families and caregivers rather than these of health care facilities.
The workshop will focus on contributions that cover areas such as:
Innovative pervasive computing applications Context modeling and reasoning for health care monitoring Adaptive, autonomic and context-aware computing Mobile/Wireless computing systems and services in the health care context Sensors and RFIDs in pervasive health care monitoring systems Wearable health care devices Visualization approaches to capturing wellness or health based on smart sensing data capture Privacy and confidentiality considerations for pervasive health care applications
We kindly invite authors to submit full papers on original and unpublished work. Papers must be written in English and shall not exceed 6 pages in IEEE proceedings style. Papers must be submitted in PDF format using EDAS. Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press. Submission implies the willingness of at least one author to fully register for PerCom 2011 and to present the paper/demo on-site. No-shows at the workshop will result in an exclusion from the IEEE Digital Library.
